Why FAIR is needed

Climate change, international poverty, globalization and a host of other issues demand a rebalancing in the capital markets. This rebalancing needs to put environmental, social and governance issues alongside traditional market measures of investment performance.

Canada needs a public debate to encourage the federal and provincial governments, securities regulators and professional bodies to consider new policies to facilitate this market rebalancing.

FAIR's mandate is to promote new thinking into the regulation of pension funds and other investment institutions, corporate disclosure and governance, tax policy, accounting standards and public infrastructure to create capital markets that are responsive to environmental, social and governance needs, as well as traditional financial concerns.

We do this by sponsoring research into public policy, and by disseminating the results of our research to the public.

Who we are

FAIR is an innovative Tides Canada Foundation Fund and project of the Social Investment Organization.

Tides is a national public foundation with a unique focus: providing charitable giving services to donors interested in values-led philanthropy in the areas of environmental sustainability and progressive social change.

SIO is the national association for socially responsible investment in Canada. Its mandate is to promote the practice and concept of socially responsible investment.

The Tides Canada Foundation - Fund for Action on Investment Responsibility collects charitable donations from individuals and foundations to support research and education into public policy involving socially responsible investment.

Future areas of research and education

The research and education agenda of FAIR will be shaped by its donors and advisors. However, we expect research into the following areas:
  • Corporate disclosure. How to open corporations to better scrutiny on environmental, social and governance issues.
  • Governance. Trends in corporate governance to encourage corporations to become more publicly accountable.
  • Investment markets. New policy regarding pension funds and other institutional investors to encourage transparency on environmental, social and governance issues.
  • Tax policy. Tax changes to place environmentally-appropriate investments on an equal footing with investments in unsustainable industries and companies.
  • Public infrastructure. Public financing tools to create incentives for investors wishing to invest in sustainable infrastructure, such as buildings that will reduce Canada's carbon footprint.
  • Accounting standards. New accounting guidelines to encourage companies to report their activities on a full cost-accounting basis.
