Zenon
Environmental, a manufacturer of water purification systems, was
named the top performer in a recent study of the Top 50 socially
responsible corporations listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Corporate
Knights, a new quarterly magazine dedicated to corporate social
responsibility, published the list in its premier issue, distributed
to 105,000 Canadians in June. The founders are Paul Fengler and Toby
Heaps.
The
scores for the ranking were calculated by Michael Jantzi Research
Associates (MJRA), using their Canadian Social Investment Database™
to assign five-year historical scores of between -100 to 100 for
Canada’s 300 largest public companies in six different categories:
community, employee relations/diversity, environment, international,
product safety and business practices, and corporate governance. A
seventh score for share performance was calculated by Corporate
Knights, and then all seven scores were weighted according to a
stakeholder model.
The
company that scored the highest was Zenon Environmental Inc. of
Oakville, Ont., which manufactures and distributes cell membrane
systems that purify water without harmful chemicals. In addition to
the socially responsible and environmentally sustainable nature of
its product, Zenon scored highly in terms of community involvement
for its donation of a water filtration system to the Temagami First
Nation and employee relations through its comprehensive
decision-making and profit sharing program.
