In its March issue, the Globe and
Mail Report on Business Magazine released a ground-breaking set of
corporate social responsibility rankings of Canadian corporations.
Based on the best-of-sector approach
pioneered by Michael Jantzi Research Associates Inc. (MJRA), the
magazine ranks Canadian companies within all major sectors of the
economy. The rankings are based on a comprehensive set of social and
environmental indicators. The indicators and the data were provided
by MJRA.
Top rated companies include: Honda
Canada (auto), CIBC and Royal Bank (banking), Sleeman Breweries and
Vincor International (food and beverage), George Weston Ltd. (food),
Tembec Inc. (forestry), Manulife (insurance), Alcan Inc. (mining),
Suncor Energy (oil and gas), Hudson's Bay Co. (retail) and
Hewlett-Packard Canada (technology).
The rankings provide a useful guide
to socially responsible investors wishing to compare companies
within sectors on their social and environmental performance. In a
cover story on the rankings, David Macfarlane writes that corporate
social responsibility is a growing corporate phenomenon.
"In precisely the same way that
conservatives successfully argued 20 years ago that it was
unconscionable to leave future generations saddled with debt,
companies have begun to contemplate the business implications of
leaving future generations saddled with costly environmental
problems and intractable social inequalities," wrote Macfarlane.
