The SIO
and TCCR have published Socially Responsible Shareholdership in
Canada -- A Handbook for Institutional Investors.
Produced
with financial assistance from the Atkinson Foundation, the Handbook
is a complete guide to investors interested in using their influence
to have corporations disclose or improve their social and
environmental performance. The Handbook explains the processes
involved in developing proxy voting guidelines, corporate dialogue,
shareholder proposals and divestment.
"It
is our view that socially responsible shareholdership is not just a
responsible ethical policy, but that it is a powerful tool for
achieving shareholder value," states the Handbook in its
introduction.
In
releasing the Handbook, SIO said the guide is very timely.
"About a year ago, federal rules for shareholder proposals were
changed," said Eugene Ellmen, SIO's Executive Director.
"Institutional
investors now have a better feel for how these new rules will affect
shareholder advocacy. As well, shareholders are getting ready for
the 2003 proxy voting season. Release of the handbook is
well-timed."
The
Handbook is available for download from Publications
section of the Web site.
