SIO to sponsor forum on Kyoto and investment

The public is invited to attend a public forum on Nov. 20, entitled The Kyoto Protocol: What it means for investment. The forum will bring together a leading researcher, analyst and portfolio manager to discuss the implications of global warming on investment.

The forum is to be held at the Sanford Fleming Building, room 1105, at the University of  Toronto, 10 King's College Road (Off College, west of University) in Toronto. It will begin at 7pm. Admission is free.

The forum will feature a panel discussion by Matthew Kiernan, Executive Managing Director, Innovest Strategic Value Advisors, Martin Grosskopf, Sustainability Analyst with Acuity Funds Management and Andrew Preston, Head of SRI for Glasgow-based Aberdeen Asset Management.

Among the topics to be covered are the investment risks and opportunities presented by global warming and the Kyoto Accord.

Recently, Innovest completed a report for the United Nations Environment Programme Financial Initiative (UNEP FI), which concluded  that climate change poses a major risk for the financial industry. A blend of market mechanisms and public policies are necessary to address the problem.

The forum is sponsored by the Social Investment Organization in conjunction with the SIO's annual general meeting. The public is also invited to attend the AGM, which will is scheduled to be held at the same location at 5:30.
